About the Department

Department of Ecology and Environmental Science

The Department of Ecology and Environmental Science (EMG) is both a research and teaching faculty situated within the Umeå University campus. The department employs approximately 160 members of staff including 20 full-time teaching staff, 50 research staff and expert guest lecturers. In addition to nationally and internationally important research in the fields of Ecology, Physical Geography and Environmental Health a range of relevant Undergraduate, Masters and Doctoral degrees are also available.

The department offers four main Undergraduate study programmes and a wide range of independent courses, catering for approximately 420 full-time students. A range of Masters programmes are available for both International and Swedish students in Ecology, Geo-ecology and Environmental Health.

A wide range of research in: ecology, evolution, aquatic ecology, environmental change, physical geography and taxonomy is carried out in the department in close conjunction with a Doctoral research degree program. The following pages represent an introduction to the department including available courses (for Swedish and International students), the research environment and employment opportunities. The information supplied to the right represents a guide for newcomers to the EMG department.

The Department is situated in three main buildings within the Umeå University campus: the Natural Science Building (Naturvetarhuset), the KBC building and the Uminova Science Park (Landscape ecology group).
